Our
Story

The Vaquero Winds took the stage in 2022 with a poignant production titled "Viridius Pascua (Greener Pastures)," setting a powerful narrative through the emotive lyrics of John Lennon's "Imagine." This heartfelt journey culminated in a stellar performance in Dayton, Ohio, earning the ensemble a gold medal in WIW finals with a notable score of 95.325.

What makes Vaquero Winds unique within the realm of independent organizations is its affiliation with a university. This distinction presents both challenges and advantages. Chad Dempsey, the Visual Coordinator and Designer for Vaquero Winds, noted the responsiveness of Vaquero Winds students to instruction and application, highlighting the efficiency gained despite the challenges of balancing academics with artistic pursuits.

Practicing three times a week, the ensemble benefits from the structure provided by university affiliation, allowing students to manage their academic responsibilities effectively. Furthermore, the proximity to a university with diverse music majors contributes to the ensemble's knowledge base, providing valuable insights into music education and performance.

The theme of "Viridius Pascua" revolves around the journey of creating a better life and new opportunities. Dempsey emphasized that portraying such a delicate topic required a deep understanding from the students, resulting in a transformative and emotionally resonant production. The dedication of Vaquero Winds members to infuse their own experiences and emotions into the performance elevated the show to new heights.

The show's design aimed to tell a compelling story, symbolizing the journey to becoming a citizen. From the opening notes of John Lennon's "Imagine" played by horn soloist Rodrigo Barrera to the concluding moments with visual soloist Lily Perez, the ensemble vividly conveyed the theme of realizing one's dreams and turning them into reality. These moments, described by Dempsey as "the embodiment of the show concept," showcased the transformative power of opportunities and trials.

Vaquero Winds turned the challenges of the past, particularly the disruptions caused by COVID-19, into an opportunity for growth. The staff aimed to provide the performers with a positive outlet, incorporating the lessons learned from the challenging year into the narrative of the show. The vulnerability displayed by the students allowed them to present their authentic selves, making the 2022 production a powerful reflection of their personal and collective journey.
